How to approach social media

Post, like, comment, repeat. It’s something we do multiple times every day, oftentimes without thinking much about it. However, on the other end of the screen, there is a ton of strategy that goes behind creating an engaging and even addicting platform for users. Learning the ins and outs of social media analytics can be highly beneficial for people or companies hoping to market themselves and grow their audiences.

The first rule of thumb when using social media is that, in my experience, there are no standard rules. The “rules” that people may talk about are truthfully meant to be broken because some of the most viral content is out of the box and never seen before. Now that we have that out of the way, here are some recommendations I have to get your foot in the door with social media.

The first is that the best way to better market yourself, increase engagement and interaction and grow a larger audience for yourself or your company, is to keep track of your social media analytics. Many social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram give you the opportunity to switch your account to a business account. By being a business account, you’re able to then view the analytics. These analytics include the number of impressions you got, the number of likes and comments, the number of people who clicked on your story, the number of new followers you go in the last week, and so much more including the times of the day where you get the highest engagement. By reviewing these numbers, you will be able to tailor your content to what the viewers are most interested in. For example, if you notice you posted a giveaway on your story that 75% of viewers clicked on, you might want to continue posting giveaways to continue getting high engagement.

Furthermore, once social media accounts start to gain a following, its important to develop a posting schedule. Since social media is always happening and there is always something new, people will be turning to your account for updates and new content. Therefore, developing a consistent posting schedule would be beneficial to continue your engagement levels. Additionally, a good way to attract more people to your content is by using hashtags. Hashtags are a popular way for people to search and find what they’re looking for. It’s best to use hashtags that are not attached to millions of posts because then your post will never be seen and hidden under all the others. Instead, picking hashtags with a medium level of posts attached to it will be more beneficial because people will be more likely to see yours. I also think its important to set short-term and long-term goals for yourself when approaching this because this will give allow for a better reflection of your social media strategy.

Most importantly when using social media, I believe it’s important to stay creative in your content creation. People don’t want to see a regurgitation of what formulas would do the best on social media. Instead, they want to see something funny, clever and something that grabs their attention right off the bat. Content creation is a field that’s always growing and changing with the incoming trends and definitely something that’s important to keep track of.
